L’Histoire du Soldat

The soldier and the devil playing cards at a table, bold colour

In 2016, the ensemble Sturm und Klang asked me to create live drawings for their production of L’Histoire du Soldat by Igor Stravinsky. I combined prepared illustrations with drawings made on stage, visualising both the narrative and the music. The angular lines and bold colours reflect the rawness and dissonance of this dark fairy tale for adults.

A violinist playing, loose black line on yellow
The soldier plays the violin sitting in the grass
The soldier drives off a red devilish beast while the princess watches
The soldier reads a huge book in the forest
The soldier and the devil trade cards and the violin
